Growing up in elementary school, John never got the chance to continue through high school, let alone trade school. He was brighter than most of us. No one chooses the family into which he or she is born. I bet you may have a similar kid in your class who was bright but never got a second chance due to their family’s low-income background.

Years later, I met John on a visit to my home country – Ghana. He could not continue his education. His father who was a carpenter could not afford to support him through high school due to severe financial constraints in the family. John started helping his father in the family trade to support his father, mother and three younger siblings. My friend never got a chance to excel to his maximum potentials. Unfortunately, by this time, he was older and had the misfortune of suffering in a car accident. The botched surgery performed on his arm invalidated his career. The healing on his arm was too late to correct. A simple surgery gone bad is now a lifetime marker on my friend.

John Village was born to be an avenue of financial help to high-potential students from poor backgrounds. Joy Village invests in human capital and give voice to a people who exist in an environment where “class” is central, a community where people with access and “who you know” could be the difference between a bright future and buried dreams.

Joy Village was created to give hope and opportunities to the marginalized, the low-income communities that lack the “right connections” in our society to attain their fullest educational abilities and narrow healthcare disparities.
